The Outer Banks are a long line of barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina in the USA. They have long been a treacherous stretch for ships and were known as a graveyard for vessels trying to land among the shoals, inlets, and shifting sands forming hidden sandbars and suddenly shallow waters. There were so many shipwrecks that one southern VA town was built with lumber washed ashore by doomed vessels.

The Outer Banks is especially turbulent because of how the Gulf Stream collides with colder waters which flow from the Arctic. These turbulent conditions foster an environment whereby storms easily form and tentacles of fog swallow entire ships.

The coast of North Carolina in turn was slower to develop compared to Charleston and Savannah to the south, and other ports to the north. Because of this, the Outer Banks were a haven for pirates, including the most famous Edward Theatch (Teach) also known as Black Beard.

All pieces have been produced and are sold out.
**Nominated for Best Fine Art Pen by PWI 2023 Reader's Choice.

Here we present our newest Limited Edition fountain pen. The maki-e artwork was done by Katsunobu Nishihara. Scott Franklin designed this piece which features the story of the Outer Banks and its pirate and modern history. One side features the treasure as articulated by the upper flat with raden / mother of pearl, while the skull and crossbones symbol typical of the black pirate flags, along with the sword articulate this Raider, Freebooter, Pirate legacy. The reverse barrel features the Outer Banks island chain articulated in platinum dust, surrounding a lighthouse that the region is now known for, offering light and guidance to the ships at sea.
